About the project

A practical home lab

Northstar is a personal sandbox for understanding streaming and media systems by building small, observable things.

Why it exists

Media software touches networking, storage, browsers and encoding. Keeping the lab small makes those connections easier to see and reason about.

Who it is for

Most of the environment is private. A few experiments are shared with invited friends when feedback is useful.

What it is not

Northstar is not a commercial streaming service, public upload platform or permanent archive for third-party content.

How it changes

Experiments are rebuilt or retired frequently. Stable ideas graduate into documented, boring infrastructure.

Access

Participation is invitation-only.

If you already have access, use the private sign-in page. New accounts are created manually for active experiments.
